Compared with six months ago it was a very different scene today at the same spot where the two rivers join near Dalkeith.  The thick frost of the last few days was starting to melt but it still lingered as can be seen in on the fence in the extra.  In the Dalkeith Oakwood SSSI netting (extra) has been placed below some of the old trees to collect the acorns.  As some of the oak trees are 700 years old and reaching the end of their lifespan with natural regeneration having had limited success, the acorns are being collected to plant as replacements in order to maintain and enhance the wood.
