The Pailis
The cairn at the site of the former coal mining community of Bothwellhaugh.
Near Hamilton Palace the mine was known as the 'Palace' and it was the mineshaft's of the 'Palace' that caused subsidence at Hamilton Palace and was a contributory factor in its demolition in 1927.
The mine closed in the late 1950's and Bothwellhaugh ceased to exist in the early 1960's.
Now all that marks the site of the 2,000 population village is a cairn. The area has been extensively landscaped and is now part of Strathclyde Country Park.
The local name for Bothwellhaugh was 'The Pailis'.
