inspiration all around us

inspired by a Spiegeltent

Pam is a seasoned festival goer and knows all about these things. We were on our way to the mobile loos when I was attracted by these stained glass windows over a wooden fence. 'That's a Spiegeltent' she said, and took me to the front door, which had a brash, fun-fair facade, which didn't appeal to me at all. She wanted to show me inside but a queue was forming for the next event. She persuaded me to go up front and ask for a peep inside.....WOW!........I was inspired!

But I soon discovered there was a second, more famous Spiegeltent at the Festival. This one, not unreasonably, is known as 'The Famous Spieltent'. It has been a regular attraction at the Fringe since 2006, and is constructed on site for the duration of the festival. It consists of about 3,000 pieces of wood, mirrors, canvas and stained glass, and is then detailed in velvet and brocade. When constructed, the Famous Spiegeltent can hold an audience of about 300-350 people.

Spiegeltents, it seems, are a legend. They originated in Belgium in the late 19th century, serving as mobile dance halls. 'The Famous Spiegeltent' that appears in Edinburgh was arguably the grandest of the all. Originally built in 1920 by master craftsmen Oscar Mols Dom and Louis Goor, 'The Famous Spiegeltent' has hosted some of the world's greatest artists over the years, including German singer Marlene Dietrich.

It only took three seconds to wow me. I'll be there next year. It doesn't matter what the event is. I'll be too busy experiencing the venue.
