Anne of Cleves house in Lewes
This former Queen of Henry viii kept her head by accepting
responsibility for the non consummation of her marriage to
the King thereby allowing the separation to proceed by way
of annulment rather than divorce. The house and much other
property came to her by way of settlement in the proceedings.
The bed is of the same period as would have been in use at
the time and there are five holes each of an inch's width in the
lower oak cross member of the bed head for the ropes
which passed under the lower straw mattress. These were
tightened with wooden chocks - hence the expression
"Sleep Tight ". How many more mattresses there were on
top depended on the wealth of the family. For the very wealthy
it would be four - the top being filled with goose feathers.
