'You are in The Market Square,' informs the 50-year-old painted sign on the wall at the city centre of Tampere, Finland. The area is mostly residential now, but the steady stream of traffic underneath the painting indicates that there is plenty of commercial activity not far in the geographically confined area of the city. The previous years have showed no decline in Christmas shopping; however, in face of recession, the Finns may have to take a careful look at their consumption as the festive season passes.
