If you can't beat them...

John Paul Jones

A day of many parts.  We began by going to Cockermouth for some shopping and followed this by a visit to Whitehaven harbour  hoping for a lovely sunset.  adly the sunset wasn't at all impressive.   The harbour was a little disappointing as on our last visit there were a number of impressive artistic sculptures around many of which have disappeared.

The shot shows the statue of John Paul Jones a scot who lead an attack on Whitehaven Harbour during the American was of independence.  He had served as an apprentice on ships out of whitehaven from the age of 13 later joining the American Navy.  He knew the town well and at the time was the second most important port in England and lead a shore party to spike the guns in the battery.  As shown in the sculpture.

After Whitehaven we headed back to Keswick for an extremely good meal and evening with friends in "The Wainright".   Why is there a modern trend for changing pub names?  I feel a town/village loses part of its history and traditions when they change the name just to be trendy or modern.
