Welcome Swallow

These Welcome Swallows are self introduced to New Zealand from Australia back in the 1800's.  They generally only live in places where the temperatures don't drop much below zero so although they are widespread, they're rarely found more than about 50km from the coast (gets too cold inland).

This pair of fledglings were hanging out on a fence at Pioneer Park this morning when I was running a couple of students up to camp.  They were really entertaining to watch, and let me get quite close to them in the car, but as soon as I opened the door they took off.
