13 geese live in the cloisters of Barcelona Cathedral. Santa Eulalia, the city's patron saint, was 13 years old when she was martyred by the Romans, who tortured her in 13 different ways until she finally succumbed to death by crucifixion. Now the geese are kept here, supposedly watching over her body, which lies in the cathedral crypt, and keeping the people of Barcelona safe from harm.
