Lost
The key word for today's Mono Monday hosted by FlyingPRGal is Lost. This is to be linked with an event that happened on this day in history.
In 1492 Columbus and his crew were hoping to find a western route to Asia and the lucrative spice trade. Instead they bumped into the Caribbean, they were obviously lost. On the 5th December of that year they landed on an island they called Hispaniola, now split between Haiti and Dominican Republic, actually there seems to be a little uncertainty over the actual date which could have been the 4th, 5th or 6th, though most seem to agree with the 5th.
The indigenous people were friendly and welcomed the Spaniards giving them gifts, including gold, in return for horses and weapons, unfortunately the presence of gold would eventually become the downfall of the local population.
As an aside: on this date in 771AD Charlemagne became the sole king of the FrankS; so that's where I found my Blipfoto name!
