Changes in Cockermouth

Today's walk was around Cockermouth (twice) and the Harris Park area had some forthcoming changes to blip. The sparky extra shows the area which had been a garage being cleared for building.
The main photo is (not) the youth hostel which is now closed and the building is now for sale. I have chosen B and W to take the old mill wheel a bit more timeless.
BUT I could do with some advice. I took this in colour and then did the B and W in processing. My cameras don't seem to have a B and W option.
I imagine that I would get a better B and W  with a camera which actually had the facility to shoot in B and W. Is that correct?
