What's The Point Of An Ornamental Crab Apple?

My mother-in-law wasn't keen on ornamental fruit trees. She was of the opinion that they are a waste of space. She favoured productive culinary trees.

Our ornamental crab brightens the spring days with its pollinator-attracting pink flowers. In the autumn the boughs are loaded with attractive, bright red, but not particularly palatable, mini apples. Come foggy winter days like today, it's a larder for Mrs Blackie and her ilk. :)
