The Herrings

The area of our town that is always known as Lower Town is the original fishing harbour. In the late 18th century the port was home to 50 coasting vessels  trading across the Irish Sea and down to Bristol and up to Liverpool. One of the most important exports were Herring although this trade died as the shoals of Herring were over fished. The port declined and is now the leisure part of the harbour. The herring monument is in Lower Town and the image of Herrings were used as the emblem for the National Eisteddfod when it was held in  ,1986.
