Dig deep

Excavations taking place in the area known as 'The Monks Graveyard' on the edge of St Albans Cathedral. This is the first step in a project 'Alban, Britain's First Saint' for which £7m has been raised (including £4m from the National Lottery Heritage Fund) and which will ultimately transform the Cathedral's visitor centre with a new exhibition area and adult study centre. The archaeologists doing the dig said that so far they have not found any Roman coins but several pieces of Roman tile. And presumably no Saint.
