U-Bahn München: 83/100 Schwanthalerhöhe
Munich Underground: 83/100 Schwanthalerhöhe
Today's entry in my strictly alphabetical Munich underground series has already its second name - today it is Schwanthalerhöhe underground station. It was originally opened in March 1984 as Messegelände station (German for trade fair grounds); the trade fair was relocated to Riem in 1998 (with two new underground stations at Messestadt Ost and Messestadt West) and the station's name was changed to the current one.
Schwanthalerhöhe is one of three station (the others being Goetheplatz and Theresienwiese) that serves Oktoberfest.
The design of the station is sober with silver aluminium plating on the walls and only a few painting of walking people and flags of different nations (both of which are part of the station's former purpose as stop at the trade fair). The platform is completely pillar-less, which gives a nice felling of open space. As with all station of the western U4 extension, like Heimeranplatz, Friedenheimer Straße or Laimer Platz, Schwanthalerhöhe's signal colour is yellow.
