An afternoon with a Lady

I am a member of a creative writers group and we are exploring the possibility of some writing prompted by the life and work of John Buchan, Lord Tweedsmuir.  There are strong local connections including a small museum/centre in Peebles where we met this afternoon.

John Buchan or JB as he was known in the family was a prolific author, barrister, civil servant, intelligence officer, propagandist, MP and Governor General of Canada.  He was a trusted friend to many of the great figures of the first part of last century.  It is astonishing what he achieved in his lifetime.  He is best known for the novel '39 Steps' which has never been out of print since its publication in 1915.

His granddaughter, Lady Deborah Stewartby, joined us this afternoon and gave us a riveting account of JB, provided many insights into his life and work and gave fascinating background into many of the objects in the museum.  A fascinating afternoon.
