Helena Handbasket

By Tivoli

All it takes

A wave in the Aegean
A cancelled ferry
A journey not begun
An airport never reached
A flight missed

Across the world
A disappointed daughter watches
As a butterfly flaps its wings

Only a little bit of splishy-sploshy – but enough to cancel a lightweight sailing. Enough to prevent one from reaching the mainland, which is where one might catch a bus to another city, one with an airport. An insignificant amount of splish has forced our friends to re-negotiate their trip to Australia and encouraged me to do something I have never done before in my life – panic-buy 18 litres of fresh milk to keep in the freezer for the ever-hungry lambs. When the supply ship is cancelled, fresh milk is the first thing the island runs out of.
