Keep your head (down)
So for three next two days D and I are in Glasgow. I haven't been here for a while and it seems scruffier and gloomier than I remember it, although the architecture is impressive. We are here because D is giving a lecture at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons about his anaesthetic experiences with Facing Africa, and it is being complimented by a small exhibition of my photos.
Having some spare time, we decided to walk up to the University and to visit the Hunterian Museum, which we had never seen before, always preferring to go to Kelvingrove. It was a really interesting collection, so varied and in a beautiful building. We then ate at an eclectic place called Tchai-Ovna, down a cobbled lane, which sells over 80 kinds of tea and serves vegetarian and vegan food. Apparently Belle and Sebastian's 2003 album art for "Dear Catastrophe Waitress" was shot here...
Walking through the University, I saw two huge rooms full of students sitting exams, their heads down, unoblivious to my camera outside in the dark of the night outside. This weekend, I have felt rather like this, head down, catching out of the corner of my eye a glimpse of another world where terrified people fear for their lives. We haven't seen any TV or heard any radio today, but I know awful stuff is going on and I feel bad about it, and helpless to do anything about it.
