Flint style

Everywhere you go in nearby village East Horsley, you find this combination of flint and very elaborate brickwork. There are cottages, houses and even mansions built in this extraordinary style and all having elaborate walls like this one on their boundaries. Some have wierd follies. In the same style there is a strange but striking two towered lodge at a bend in the A246 that travellers can't fail to spot.
The village was restored by the first Earl of Lovelace in the 1860s when he inherited East Horsley Towers. Having developed his home in this elaborate fashion, he set about restoring everyone else's!
