Royal Infirmary painting

I noticed this painting for the first time at the Royal Infirmary, although I expect it's been there for ages. I was having a coffee after a procedure on my hip, and I happened to look up, and there it was. I'm not quite sure what it's meant to be conveying - is the child with her head on the woman's lap ill? I haven't been able to find out anything about it.

I will probably have to wait until mid February for the results of the procedure which was looking at whether the artificial joint is infected (hope to goodness it isn't) and/or if it's come loose.
