Timeless...

County Durham had more of its fair share of coal mines and they in turn spawned a cottage industry based around home grown produce from allotments and small holdings, a spare time hobby and the only opportunity many underground workers had to suck in some fresh air, socialise and relax and at the same time provide fresh food for their families.  This ramshackle clutter of buildings is typical of the 'industrial' allotment, the use of scrap materials being predominant.  Patched up fencing, a water butt, some winter brassicas and indications of livestock suggest this one has grown from allotment to small holding.  Apart from the use of modern materials this image is timeless and would be recognisable to generations of north east miners.
