Marco Zanuso
Marco Zanuso
The building that Olivetti are in is one of my favorite buildings of all time, it was designed by Marco Zanuso in the 70s I guess. It was a massive factory.
It is all pretty empty and run down now, a lot of the planting is overgrown and a bit wild which is lovely.
It is everything that Architecture should be, a collection of simple elements that are good solutions to separate problems all sitting harmoniously together.
Every element is humble and functional, and as a result of that un-arguably beautiful in a way that great engineering solutions always are.
If only all architects realized that beauty is the efficiency of our connection to the physics of our world.
The most fantastic bridges are always the ones that span the furthest with the least materials, we call it grace, grace is efficiency.
Decoration is no substitute for grace (see the scottish parliament for an example of this) But decoration can enhance something graceful (see the the ceiling of a great cathedral for an example of this)
Architects (Grimshaw) often liberally apply 'engineering' to there buildings thinking they will naturally appear graceful. Yet they have it all wrong, nothing looks less graceful than something who's sums are bloated.
The essence of all beauty is science.
In aircraft design it is often the case that the best looking planes also fly the best.
Ill be getting on mine soon so I will shut up now.
