White Wells

Walking on the moor this morning.

In the 17th century a local shepherd had a sore leg.    Walking across Ilkley Moor he came across a spring of fresh water.   He bathed his leg in the cool water.   The next morning his wound felt better.   Day after day he returned, and eventually his ailment was gone.

Thus started the career of Ilkley as a popular spa - a place to come and take the waters for health and well being     You could hire an ass for 4p (donkeys 5p) to ride up the hill to take the cure.
