Panning for gold in the drains
This man makes his living collecting debris from the drains around the gold and silver market - he actually found the little bit of gold seen in the extra while I was watching. He said it was worth about 550 rupees (nearly £8). He finally got down to the last bit of silt to fish out minute bits of gold the size of a grain of sand. Went hunting for material to make a dressing gown and kept on meeting the donkeys that carry out the remains of old houses. They will be bringing in the bricks and stones to build new ones later. Once they are outside the city limits the debris is dumped for then it can be removed by lorry. The lanes are not made for anything bigger than donkeys and carts but motorbikes can get through and are a nightmare! At the back of my guest house is the second largest building in the city - it is a haveli (house round a courtyard usually) belonging to one of the old Maharajah's agents. The current owners are having a very prolonged court case for there are so many descendants living there who all want to inherit a piece of the pie - in the meantime nothing gets done in the way of maintenance. Alongside is a huge round based building that used to have a canon on top - in the C18 this was fired at midnight to signal the closing of all the City gates. Since I am within a few feet of it I am glad that doesn't happen now. Join me on my walk
