The nature of light

Me and hubby visited the Art Gallery Himmelblau, where is Charles Sandison's light installation. Boy oh boy, it was amazing! Walking in the dark hall where millions of light points wandered around... it was something very special and magical.

The nature of light, 2016. The work consists of a network of computers and projectors. The work begins with 5,488,543 points of light, each point represents one life (the estimated population of Finland as of July 2016).
The computers collectively run a program written in C++ by the artist which combines population projection data sets provided by Statistics Finland.

The computer program is alive and constantly changing. the points live and die, each point of light has a maximum life time approximately 130 seconds. Points breed, multiply, form communities. They are constantly searching and exploring the hall they live within.

Mirrors are used to allow the visitor to become part of the art work. The artist hopes that perhaps some of light points will transcend the room via the neural pathways of the human optic nerve as signals/messages/packets of energy and out into our world.

Emma is doing fine on the camp, can't wait to get her home on Saturday!
