Superstition

I spotted these two teapots in a cavity within a dry stone wall.   The larger one had no lid or handle and the small one had only slight damage but had a 50p piece inside.   I understand from a Farmer friend that this is a very old tradition, possibly to ward off evil spirits and turn witches away.   He says he knows of it but has no further information.
