Irwell

Beck and I decided to have a little overnight break from the festivities in Manchester- kind of a mid-week weekend away. After a rather stressful start when the street proved too icy for the car and we had to get a bus down to the station instead everything then began to proceed somewhat more smoothly. We ate a chicken burrito in St. Ann's Square and then wandered down to the Irwell to the People's History Museum. The pitch of the information was a bit unsure for me but it's a very interesting place and worth a visit for the beautiful banners that are on display alone. Plus there was a very good exhibition of work by the printmaker Paul Peter Piech. Then we made our way to the hotel via the fascinating Castlefields area - past the entrance to the old Granada Studios, along the canal under the railway bridges and round via the remains of a Roman Fort and the derelict Victorian Markets; all fascinating stuff that I was previously unaware of. And later there was dinner at Mr. Cooper's House...
