In the undergrowth
I didn't manage to stay up for the fireworks at midnight. The positive outcome was that I had another early morning run on the beach (with lots of walking and standing as I took photos of the herons, the kuaka (godwits), the torea tai and torea pango (pied and black morphs of the variable oystercatcher), kotare (kingfishers).
Later we drove back to the city and then west to friends for lunch where in the boundary plantings on their property, I saw an adult Californian Quail with some chicks. This was today's best photo.
