The Altar at Aesica

Known as Great Chesters north of Haltwhistle on the Wall. We said our prayers at this altar to Fortune for 2017 and heard the goddess whisper.....

"HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL"

It's surprising that in a site of this importance (a fort and settlement) there are no information boards or signs of any kind.

It was excavated 100 years ago and many inscriptions found. Cohorts such as spearman from Raetia (Switzerland ) and infantrymen from Belgium, the Nervii, served on the wall as well as many others.

They (the Romans) did not raise troops from the indigenous population due to an uprising in 49AD of native auxiliaries.
