Strange Fruit

No, I know what it is. I've seen one before. Actually, that is the mystery. I see them often, in our fruit basket. No, the mystery is what they are for because despite being a regular in our fruit basket we seldom eat pineapple. So, my questions are:

Where do they come from?
Why are they there?
What happens to them?
