New Lanark

We decided we needed to get out this afternoon so drove along to New Lanark for a little lunch and a stroll along the Clyde.  It is a fascinating place and the more I go the more curious I become to find out more about the place.  It might become a regular haunt in the months ahead.

The mills were established in the late 18th Century with very extensive use of child labour.  In the early 19th Century, it was under the management of Robert Owen who undertook ' the most important experiment for the happiness of the human race that has yet been instituted in any part of the world.'  He linked commercial success with the care and compassion for the workforce.

Like all such mills, its fortunes declined and the area was to be demolished in the 1970s.  Instead a long term programme of restoration was established.  It became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2001.

Definitely need to find out more.
