A Wainwright

After leaving our hosts we went to the Keswick museum to see the recommended exhibition on Alfred Wainwright.
Among the fascinating exhibits is an early draft for entry in his Pictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fells book One: the Eastern Fells, this page for Dove Crag, with his alterations, the whole page scored out, possibly to indicate that it had been completed for publication. Of note is his neat, pencil cursive script, not the (non-cursive) hand that he used in the guides themselves, for which he used a dip-pen (several of which are on display) and ink. It was confirmed that the line drawings for the guides were made at home from photographs taken along the walks, not drawn en plein air along the way.

The exhibition closed today but though small the museum has plenty of interest, including a Lithophone - the equivalent of a xylophone but with keys made of slate - see extra photo.
