U-Bahn München: 84/100 Sendlinger Tor (U3/U6)

Munich Underground: 84/100 Sendlinger Tor (U3/U6)

It's been almost a month since my last entry in my strictly alphabetical Munich underground series, so I thought it's time for the next station. Today's featured underground stop is the upper level of Sendlinger Tor underground station. It was opened in October 1971 and is therefore one of the stations of the very first line. It is served by the orange U3 and blue U6 lines.

Similar to the other stations of the first line, like Alte Heide or the upper level of Odeonsplatz (and with the huge exception of Marienplatz), the design was done by Paolo Nestler, who employed tiled pillars (here: blue) and walls of fibre cement.

Since 1980 the red U2 line crosses Sendlinger Tor with a separate station underneath today's featured station. From that point on Sendlinger Tor was one of the most important underground hubs in Munich's network. Due to the increased ridership, the stations were becoming too small over time; therefore, both levels will be refurbished (wihtout being closed) from spring 2017 to some time in 2021 to accomodate a higher number of riders and ease the change of trains.

Above gound you find the city gate of the same name, the Evangelical Lutheran church of St Matthew, and an important interchange stop of Munich's tram network.
