Morning stillness at the quay

Mr H's kitten (who is spending the weekend with us) thinks its breakfast time at 5:30. He did then let me go back to sleep, and I woke too late to be anywhere good for pictures of the sunrise. Down by the waterfront, the sun was a very large bright orb of fire, dazzling if one looked even mildly eastward.

This picture, of the reflections of Light Quay apartments in the waters of the inner reaches of Viaduct Harbour is taken looking south. Viaduct Harbour is so named because there was once a viaduct carrying vehicles across the entry to the harbour. It was removed to enlarge and upgrade the harbour from where the Auckland fishing fleet was based to rich men's facilities when NZ first defended the America's Cup here. For the Rugby World Cup last year the area to the west was upgraded (becoming the Wynyard Quarter) and pedestrian access was re-established on the line of the old viaduct, with a new bridge.

The original bridge, designed to carry rail trucks, was a rolling lift bridge. The replacement bridge is much lighter and is also a lifting bridge. This time to allow passage of the tall masts of the big yachts.

Over the last ten years, a lot of apartments have been built in this area, and the Lighter Quay building seen here is one of the more expensive buildings. I believe that the moorings can be purchased or leased as part of the apartment price.

No wind this morning, an almost cloudless sky, the brilliantly clear light of the early morning. Super reflections.

Later in the run, I had a number of other blippable shots, which if I have time I may put on my blipfolio. Working this weekend on reports and agenda papers. Took some time to head briefly north to visit S' mother and her freesia lawn, and get the manuka honey ordered requested by tsuken for next weekend's visit to Sydney.
