The waxwings are here this year (see 3 Jan) but today was special. I've chased them many times before but today they came to us. I'd seen them a couple of weeks' ago a few streets away, but never thought the tropical-looking creatures would choose us, directly. I opened the front door hear their now-immediately recognisable trilling, and there they were, on the roof, doing a fair impression of starlings, warming their bums on chimney pots. They were eyeing up an as-yet-undeflowered, undevoured berry tree down the street, waiting for quiet to dash down for a gregarious gorge. Next day they were gone, to another street, another berry tree feast, hopefully delighting someone who'd not known these wild things. If they see. Sadly most people don't, but they should. Life would be a little better if they did.
