The Bass Rock

The Bass is a volcanic rock (351 ft/ 107 m high ) sitting in the Firth of Forth opposite North Berwick. It was once the home of an early Christian Hermit, later a castle was built on it which subsequently became the infamous prison in the Covenanting times. The Lighthouse was built in 1902 and the rock is now the home to the largest and most important colony of Gannets in the UK In the breeding season the rock is white with the guano and can be seen for many miles around.
