inspired by a co-operative
The United Nations has designated 2012 the year of Co-operatives. From Argentina to Zambia, the 1.4 million co0operatives across the globe will be celebrating and showing how they build a better world. Co-operatives are unique because they give everyday people an equal say, making a difference to individual lives across the world.
The Unicorn co-operative in Manchester is a joy to shop in. The members aim to trade in wholesome foodstuffs and goods which have undergone minimal processing and in a manner which supports a sustainable world environment and economy. They trade in products which in themselves and in their packaging produce minimum impact on the environment.
Every child is allowed to take a piece of fruit or vegetable to eat while the grown ups are shopping. The young girl in front of me had found a caterpillar in her apple. Her mother suggested she took it home carefully to see if it would turn into a butterfly. Rather hopeful, perhaps, especially as it was probably a maggot, but I liked the optimistic attitude!
I am inspired by such imaginative and ethical trading. More power to your elbows, Unicorn!
