Into The Unknown

Clavell Tower

We went to Kimmeridge today to look for fossils. I was rather taken aback by the way fossil hunters were just tearing at the shale rock face and then using hammers to break open the layers of stone. No wonder it is all eroding away. There are plenty of tiny fossils to be found in the shale on the beach.
In the background you can see Clavell Tower. The 70 year old Reverend Richard Clavell inherited the Smedmore Estate in 1817 and built this elegant folly. In 2002 when it was deemed to be too close to the eroding cliff edge the Landmark Trust moved it back piece by piece onto safer ground.
The weather was pretty atrocious this afternoon but the birthday boy seemed to enjoy his day with a BBQ in the evening cooked by Ben under an umbrella. What a wet Bank Holiday for everyone.
