On another day of not much to be seen I went to one of our gorgeous fenland churches. This is a carving on a pew end. It was perhaps defaced in the time of Oliver Cromwell and I wonder if that is the origin of the word, as several figures were lacking faces or had parts missing although it might just be the grain of the wood that caused it.  He looks pleased though and she looks smitten. ;-)
