Wintery Bus Challenge No 116!!
The George Inn courtyard, Norton St Philips
A potted history of Britain’s oldest tavern:
- Originally built in 13th century as a wool store for Hinton Priory at nearby Hinton Charterhouse
- 14th century inn, serving beer since 1397
- Visited on 12 June 1668 by the noted diarist Samuel Pepys, with his wife and servants, on their way to Bath from Salisbury
- Headquarters for the Duke of Monmouth and his army during the Monmouth Rebellion in 1685, after his retreat from Bath
- Judge Jefferies held court here and conducted 12 executions as part of the Bloody Assizes
- Used as a setting for films such as The Remains of the Day, Tom Jones, and The Canterbury Tales, as well as in the television adaptations of Persuasion by Jane Austen and Moll Flanders by Daniel Defoe
My first Bus Challenge for a while so eased myself into things with a morning visit to Norton St Philip, only a short bus ride to the south of Bath. After a visit to the 14th century church and a bracing walk around the village on a bright, cold and oh so windy day, called into The George Inn for a warming hot chocolate in front of a roaring log fire, the perfect way to end a wintery Bus Challenge!!
Total bus journey time = 1 hours 40 mins
Total waiting between buses time = 15 mins
Total journey time = 1 hour 55 mins
