The British Speedway Grand Prix 2012
It's rolled around again ... or should I say, skidded around again. The annual pilgrimage to the Millennium Stadium for all the petrol heads who love the sport of Speedway.
I am very proud to say as a Welshman that the greatest Speedway event in the World takes place on my doorstep every year. Over 40,000 fans fill the stadium and make more noise and atmosphere than any other sporting event I attend. It really is quite something.
It always amazes me how they transform the stadium from a football and rugby pitch into a speedway track, and then back again in such a short space of time.
It was another great meeting, with some tremendous races. The track preparation has improved immensely over the past few years, and doesn't rut up at all now. If anything, it goes a bit slick during the meeting now, so making a good start and a first good lap is vital.
There were a couple of Brits to cheer in the shape of Scott Nichols and Chris "Bomber" Harris, but British Speedway isn't quite at world level at the moment, and neither made it past the qualifying heats into the semi final, but then again, neither did last years winner, Greg Hancock, and with both his nearest rivals getting through, and Chris Holder winning the the Grand Prix, picking up 14 points on the night, the World Championship standings are now mighty close going into the last few rounds of the competition.
As always the staff at the stadium were brilliant, they fast tracked Dawn's parents through the crowds as they both need walking sticks to get around. They can't do enough for you.
Next years date at the Millennium Stadium is announced on Monday, and Dawn's parents will have bought the tickets by the time this week is out. There are always plenty of tickets to buy on the day, and I cannot recommend it enough if you want a top night out watching something different.
Roll on the 2013 BSGP ....
