Selfies from the Brink

Ângela

Ângela helps us out twice a week in our effort to keep our home clean. Ângela dropped out of school in 5th grade when her father died. At the age of twelve she began caring for her sick mother and her eleven brothers and sisters. She never stopped working since then. Today she's 45 and provides for her husband and her two grandchildren. In spite of all the difficulties she had to overcome in her life, she saved enough money to build two modest houses.
While she cleans our house, she talks non-stop with some family or friend on the phone. That's how she keeps me informed about the latest rumours involving some local starlet or some terrible accident that happened in town.
Two weeks ago, she was bitten by her neighbor's dog. Since no one was at home when it happened, she called me asking for help, and I took her to the hospital. Two days later, someone rang the bell at our door, and it was Ângela.
"What are you doing here?" I asked her.
"I have to clean your house. Without your wife looking after you and the house, it must look terrible."
True. But instead of admitting the obvious, I told her to go home immediately and rest.
Today is her first day back at work.

As you can see, she doesn't feel very much at ease in front of a camera.
