Wild Wednesday: Glaze Ice Covers All!
We woke this morning to half an inch (1.27 cm) of icy glaze from freezing rain. Looking out the window I watched the birds and squirrels sliding around on the ice. We put on our Kahtoola Microspikes and surveyed our world. Carefully we wandered down the drive discussing whether the snowplow and truck would break up the ice.
Jeff sprinkled salt on a particularly steep section and in the afternoon he was able to plow a portion. We hope it stays above freezing tonight. Tomorrow we will sprinkle salt on another section and Jeff will use the plow to get down the hill and out to the road.
The extra provides another view of glaze ice near the house. Tonight the newscaster announced that both roads through the gorge remain closed for another day at least. Hwy. 14, on the Washington side, is closed until a massive snow slide can be cleared. Interstate 84, on the Oregon side is closed due to ice and snow.
I was reminded of a stanza from Bob Dylan's song "You Ain't Goin' Nowhere":
Clouds so swift, rain won't lift
Gate won't close, the railings froze
Get your mind off wintertime
You ain't goin' nowhere
On a positive note, thanks to everyone for your comments, stars and favorites for my squirrel blip yesterday, "We want more seeds!". I did sprinkle fresh seed as yesterday's was coated with ice.
