2017 Sunday -- "Those Who Wait"

Today we drove to Morro Bay then out and near Morro Rock to see the sculpture "Those Who Wait" that I've captured in my photo. This explanation is from Central Coast Women for Fisheries, Inc. website:

"The idea for this sculpture came as a result of the many family members in Morro Bay who have over the years ventured to this location to bid their loved ones farewell as they head out to sea. It is a lovely tribute to those waiting families and most notably the women who were left behind to tend to the many challenges of raising a family while their partners were away at sea, sometimes for months at a time. Many of our fishermen return home safely, for which we are grateful, but sadly some do not. We honor those lost at sea as well with the making of this public art piece."

"The Fishermen’s Family Sculpture entails an over life-sized bronze female in modern clothing, waving to her husband and crew as they pass their families on their journey towards the hazardous seas. You can read the concern on her face as she and her family have lived with the risks involved in fishing. Her two year old daughter holds onto her jeans reaching for her brother’s fishing pole. The seven year old son is baiting his hook with an anchovy. His recent success is evidenced by the ‘catch of the day’ filling his bucket beside him. A familiar story is now playing out for future generations."

"The sculpture was created by world renowned and local artist Elizabeth MacQueen."

Next time I will photograph the sculpture from the front.
