Moeraki Boulders

It was a lovely day today and we saw Dunedin in better light and sunshine as we drove north.

The large, grey spherical Moeraki Boulders lie partially submerged in the sandy beach at the tide line.  Their smooth exteriors hide honeycomb centres and this can be seen in some of the broken boulders.  Originally formed around a central core of carbonate of lime crystals that attracted minerals from their surroundings - a process which began 60 million years ago.  Lots of people on the beach (and the boulders) enjoying the scenery.

From here we continued north to Oamaru and then travelled inland to Kurow, Otematata, Omarama and then turned north to Twizel and Lake Tekapo where we are staying for a couple of nights.  Fabulous views of Mount Cook across Lake Pukuki.

Great day with lots of different landscapes.
