Life in Newburgh on Ythan

The Large Newburgh Collider

Much impressed with the results coming from the Large Hadron Collider at CERN a group of people from our village decided to have bash at doing something similar, but on the cheap. Earlier this morning we fired up our device and are much encouraged by our first results. You can clearly see the paths of two sub-atomic particles created by the colliding atoms. We are confident that it won't be long before we detect the elusive God particle.

Extra. This is the Roman Theatre in the ancient desert city of Palymyra. The beautiful facade is no more having been recently destroyed by members of Islamic State. It is perhaps too easy for us to to feel self-righteous when faced with such mindless iconoclasm. Such wanton destruction of religious sites is nothing new and hardly unknown in our own land. Our island is scattered with the ruins of mediaeval abbeys and priories torn down at the time of the reformation. Further evidence of those iconoclastic events is provided by all the mediaeval woodwork lost from our great cathedrals and churches and the numerous empty niches where religious statues once stood.
