As enjoyed by the Pope

The story about the Pope eating them may be apocryphal, but these little amaretti biscuits (soft macaroons) are popular in Italy and beyond.

These are the very ones given to us by the ladies in the shop at Giarole.

They are manufactured in Sassello, a little town in Savona Province, Liguria, which is about 50 miles south of Giarole, near to the sea. It looks (on its website) a pretty little town. A place to visit next time, perhaps?
