Teleprinter Operators: 1946 and 2012

One of the pleasures of being a grandma is talking about experiences which are childhood memories to you but history topics for the grandchild.

Wet weather entertainment took us to the Arran Heritage Museum. H was fascinated by this switchboard from Brodick Post Office.

The photo and information on the right hand side tells how, in 1946, Marette Fraser would use her teleprinter in Brodick to send messages direct to Glasgow. Even more amazing that I could then tell H that, in 1946, working on the teleprinter in Glasgow's G.P. O. was a pretty young woman called Jean Ford who had worked on teleprinter and telegrams right through the 2nd World War.

And Jean was H's great-grandmother!

History is only a heartbeat away!
