Hyakunin Isshu
Good news from Arthur today. He earned a certificate for being third out of about 130 children in his school's hyakunin isshu contest. Hyakunin isshu is a game in which you have to find the card which matches the second half of the poem to the first half which one person reads out. In other words, to be good at this game you have to memorise the one hundred poems on the cards. Valerie also came third when she competed a few years ago as well.
Here is Arthur's favourite of the one hundred poems:
"Water of Tatsuta River was tie-dyed scarlet by maple leaves?
I would never hear such a thing even in the era of God when strange things often happened."
(Ariwara no Narihira no Ason (825-880)
