Cold War Icon
WEDNESDAY
A trip this afternoon to see Avro Vulcan XH558 at Robin Hood Airport, Doncaster. This week is the last time the public can see the plane as the lease on hangar 3 is shortly due to expire. XM558 is being moved to a temporary hangar which sadly will be out-of-bounds. Plans are afoot for a new purpose-built viewing facility but, if funding is not forthcoming, the iconic jet faces uncertain future.
The Vulcan was developed to keep Britain in the cold war and is an iconic example of that remarkable period of intense post-war innovation that made British aviation technology the envy of the world.
XM558 was last flown in October 2015 and it's unlikely a Vulcan will ever take to the skies again.
