Gilberto
Remember Romildo? This is his brother Gilberto. He works for his brother in his "Qualquer Lugar Bar" and has been waiting the tables for almost twenty years now. When I got to the restaurant/bar, no other clients were there, so Gilberto had time for a little chat. At age 10, he and some friends hitchhiked to São Paulo (that's 1300 km!) because they'd heard that there was a school especially for children from rural areas that taught agricultural techniques to the kids: "How to get more out of your land with more work" - that's how Gilberto summed it up.
Somehow he survived in the big city, and five years later he returned to our little town. In his early twenties, he met a pretty girl, they got married and had two sons. They are now 32 and 34 years old and work as electricians. But things didn't go well with his wife. They separated, and Gilberto stayed single for 15 years.
"But I missed the boys", he says. So, at the age of 46, he married again and had two other boys. They are 10 and twelve now. Gilberto will be 60 in April.
When I asked him why he didn't open his own business, he answered: "You know, I'm not a risktaker. I like to play it safe."
The extra shows Gilberto and his brother Romildo.
